The Economics of Used Pallets: A Strategic Business Decision

Direct Cost Savings: New vs. Used

Let’s look at the numbers. A new 48”x40” pallet can cost $20-$30. The same size in our used pallets in Calgary or Surrey (Grade B “Good & Solid”) is just $9-$12—saving you 40-55% per unit.

For a business using 500 pallets/month:

  • New Pallets (at $25 ea): $150,000/year
  • Used Pallets (at $12 ea): $72,000/year
  • You Save: $78,000/year

That’s capital you can reinvest directly back into your growth.

Hidden Financial Advantages

Choosing used pallets in Vancouver, Kelowna, and across Alberta & BC offers more than upfront savings:

  • Lower Loss Risk: Reduced asset value means less worry if a pallet isn’t returned.
  • Better Cash Flow: Keep working capital freed up for other needs.
  • Budget Certainty: Our clear grading system allows for predictable, long-term planning.

  • Waste Diversion: For every 1,000 used pallets, we prevent 10 tons of wood from entering local landfills.
  • Carbon Reduction: Reusing a pallet eliminates 35 kg of CO₂ vs. manufacturing new. Our annual supply prevents thousands of tons of emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at jbrar@advancepallet.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

What's the real difference between "used," "recycled," and "remanufactured" pallets?

These terms are often confused but represent different value propositions:

  • Used Pallets (What we sell here): Pallet returned from service, inspected, and resold as-is (after minor repairs if needed). Best for direct cost savings.
  • Recycled/Remanufactured Pallets: Pallet fully disassembled; damaged components replaced with new wood, then rebuilt to original specifications. A hybrid product with better-than-used quality at below-new cost. (See our separate Recycled Pallets service page).
How can I be sure used pallets won't fail under heavy loads?

Our grading system is your assurance. Grade B pallets are guaranteed for standard dynamic loads (2,200+ lbs). We err conservatively—if a pallet has any doubt, it’s downgraded. For heavy, concentrated loads (like machinery), we recommend custom pallets or specific heavy-duty used skids available at our Calgary yard.

Do you buy used pallets from businesses?

Yes! We operate a robust pallet recovery program across British Columbia and Alberta. If your business generates consistent pallet flow (especially standard 48″x40″), contact us about our pickup and buyback programs. This can turn your waste stream into a small revenue stream or credit.

Can used pallets be heat-treated for export if needed?

While we occasionally have heat-treated (HT) used pallets, they are uncommon. For reliable, compliant export, we strongly recommend new heat-treated pallets. The cost of discovering non-compliance at customs far exceeds the pallet savings. Visit our Heat-Treated Export Pallets page for dedicated solutions.

What's your process if I receive a pallet that doesn't meet the ordered grade standard?

Customer satisfaction is guaranteed. If any pallet in your order fails to meet its grade specification as defined on this page, contact us within 24 hours of delivery. We will promptly replace it at our cost and pick up the substandard unit. This policy has been in place for over two decades across all our locations.
